Opening Reception: Kids' Community Photography Exhibition "Through Their Eyes"

  • Parrish Street Forum 108 W. Parrish Street Durham, NC (map)

The FENCE brings together world-class international photography. We have raised funds to do a very special project that leverages these visions from around the world for a group of local underrepresented students. Kids will be paired with local photography mentors to learn about photography using the FENCE as a springboard. The kids will experience the FENCE deeply and each will pick out a favorite artist’s work that speaks to them. With their mentors, the kids will figure out how each of the chosen artists uniquely see the world, and what photographic styles/methods they used to communicate their vision (e.g., framing, points of view, equipment, timing, etc.). Then, with high end DSLR camera gear, the teams will go out in Durham and shoot in a similar style to their chosen artist. The kids will be shown how to process their images and print out their work for the show. A local photography gallery will be doing the printing to create museum quality results. The culmination will be in a solo show at the Black Wall Street Parish Street Forum during October, coinciding with the Click! photography festival. More details at
