Atlanta-based artist and National Winner Joshua McFadden is recieving widespread attention for his photo series Come to Selfhood , in which McFadden strives to make the previously invisible Black man visible.
In this photo series, McFadden explores the identify of the African American man. His work highlights notions of masculinity, displaying archived entries of "the father figure". With this series, McFadden provides a frame of reference that visually articulates the numerous identities of young Black men. He asks his subjects (and viewers) "How does one begin to challenge the misguided perceptions that decrease the quality of living for young African American men? Furthermore, how does one position himself in a society that does not acknowledge his true identity?"
